Rigel Ziri Starling

The rest of the mingusat system calls him Rigel-Ziri, but I know him as Yabahi... My Daddy.

My dad grew up with time split between The Combs and Samūm’s dunes working with his family; riding a small ground train for trade amoung the dispursed surface dwellers and providing critical supplies for nomadic wanderers. He treats every cargo run like a anything from a sandstorm to a traveler in need could is waiting just out of sight. He is a citizen of the Underground Kingdom of Al-Sahra'.

He was the third son a mother and father who were born in the Combs. The name Rigel derives from an Arabic term meaning “the left leg of the giant,” referring to the figure of Orion. I know, it's corny; but it's my name and it makes me proud to say that in some way, he is part of me. Star names are still common in our day, though perhaps less so on Samum.

He’s the one who taught me to trust memorize your navigation lines, rehearse evacuations, and to never assume a hatch sealed just because a computer says so. Estéban Vega still calls him brother even after those tense Sangay hearings, proof that my dad is the kind of friend that you never let go of. He met my mother, Aurora, in 2260.
